The Most Maligned Tool in our Industry

Every year, Jane Hart collects and analyzes lists of top 10 tools for learning. As a result of the 16th Annual Tools for Learning survey, this year she generated a list of 100 Top Tools for Learning. And, although it is a much-maligned tool, PowerPoint is ranked once again as #2 on the list in tools for Personal Learning, Workplace Learning and Education.

But it seems like only a few people know that PowerPoint has got standard features that can turn it into a powerful eLearning authoring tool. Many designers use it to create mock-ups, story boards, image editing, branching scenarios, and more. So, we thought we’d take some time this week to recognize the Most Maligned Tool in Our Industry and share daily examples and resources that you can access for little to no cost.

Here’s one of our favorites – Escape Rooms – the perfect way to test your wits in a race against time. Throughout the world the fascinating world of Escape Rooms is popular and growing! According to S. Nicholson’s study on escape rooms, they involve teamwork, communication, and delegation as well as critical thinking, attention to detail, and lateral thinking.

In addition to being a fun activity, digital escape rooms can also be used as effective training tools. A digital escape room engages the learner by using game mechanics such as story, Easter eggs, puzzle solving and competition and provides a unique platform for learning.
